Resolutions – 2013 – TCB

Not only will 2013 be The Year Of Wine, as previously dubbed, I think it is also going to be The Year of TCB.  As in our friend Elvis, Taking Care of Business (in a flash).    It’s rapidly advancing on February so I thought I better post up my resolutions for 2013 so I can have something to help guide my year.

Home & Project Related

1. Bedroom — I think I’ve been blogging about the bedroom (yes we have only one in our house) since I started this blog.  Time to put a fork in this room.  Two walls are currently partially painted. . . must finish . . .

BEDROOM HALF PAINTED AND BLURRY

2. Living Room – This room may always be in flux but I have some Danish Daybeds lurking in the god forsaken basement waiting for a chance to see the light of the living room day.  Time to make that happen.

MR MODTOMIC DANISH DAYBEDS

(Image above from Mr. Modtomic)

3. Organize this #$$% (AKA the basement) -Really my goal is to touch everything in our house — every knick-knack stored in every closet will be sorted, pondered and eventually donated to Goodwill.  This will culminate in a grand cleaning of the basement, where all things go in this house to be stored and then forgotten.  This is a big one and is going to take buy-in from the husband (whom I have not yet consulted BTW).

THE BASEMENT

4. Exterior  – Also requiring buy-in from JT as a lot of this falls into his domain – he was a part-owner of a landscape business during college.  Our yard is sad, sad, sad right now — we have cinch bugs in the front and dog poo covering the back yard so it’s kind of now or never for some yard work and updates.

5.  TCB – Here’s where the real TCB kicks in.  Window with torn screen – TCB.  Door needing sweep – TCB.  Hole where doorbell receiver was needing patch and paint – TCB.  There’s a lot of little things that need tackling.  So by lumping them together and turning them into one “big thing”, I’m planning on tackling most if not all of these items this year.

6.  Music – Right now our house is not set up so we can easily listen to music.  Which is really quite sad if you ask me, considering I live with a musician.  In 2013 I want to make a special effort to make music easy and accessible in our home.  My plan has to do with Apple Airports and a new record player set-up, coming soon to a living room near me!

DESK IN LR BEFORE

(This is the old layout — soon to be new and improved!)

Personal Goals

1. Book Club – One of my goals last year was to read at least one new book per month.  I don’t think I quite got there but I read some good ones: The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin, The Pearl by John Steinbeck, Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo by Stieg Larsson and The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky.  Also Starting From Happy by Patricia Marx and Bossypants by Tina Fey in the comedy division.  So I guess seven out of twelve ain’t bad?  I’m trying out a book club in 2013 to keep me reading and engaged with others.  Fingers crossed it goes well and there’s not that one annoying person who talks just to talk.  Also, I hope that person I just described isn’t me . . . the first meeting is Wednesday so I’ll let you guys know how it goes!  (And I recommend all those books listed out above – so good!)

2. Dinner Parties!  This didn’t happen in 2012 but it will in 2013.  Invitations for the first one have already been sent.

INVITES

3.  Wedding!!!!  2013 is the year of my sister’s wedding.  I am the oldest and bossiest of three girls so needless to say I have a lot of bossy-ing to do to get this wedding together.  (Total sarcasm.  My sister and mother could totally do this but I’m so excited to help in any and every way that I can.  That mean’s I have been self-elected president of the Committee for Decorations, Centerpieces and Favors.  Watch out world (I mean St. Louis.))

SAVE THE DATE - FRONT

(Their save the date by yours truly.)

4. Invest in Myself — This might be an obvious one but sometimes I find it hard to justify spending money on myself when there are so many other things I would rather spend it on (furniture, vacations, etc.).  But I would benefit from some advanced Photoshop and Illustrator classes and things like this could maybe move my career forward a little.  So it’s time to give me a chance.

5. Guitar!!! – Okay this was a 2012 resolution.  It’s another now or never.  First I need to decide what to learn – bass guitar or regular guitar.  Any advice/opinions on this one?

6.  Music (again) – Organize the digital music library!  It’s a mess and we’re going to DJ #3 WEDDING so this is a priority.

So that’s an even 12. . .  just to throw things a little off-balance I’m going to add a lucky #13: Studio!  I have a little room in the basement and it might be nice if it was a place I could go to work on projects and dream up ideas for this little ol’ blog.  What are your 2013 resolutions?  Do they involve Elvis?

(For kicks a picture I took when we visited Graceland three or four years ago before this blog was even a twinkle in our eye.  Elvis loves blue as much as I do.)

GRACELAND

(PS – JT took me to see Memories of Elvis (a tribute/impersonator) and no kidding, this was his Facebook status: “About to watch my wife scream at not-Elvis”. )

(PPS – You guys probably think I am way more obsessed with Elvis than I am.  I just have a healthy love for the guy.  I mean, he is the king of rock and roll!)

New Stuff!

Who doesn’t love new stuff?  I’ve been doing a January purge and somehow having some free space makes me think I need to hit the thrifts (plus we have been on a lamp quest as noted in the previous post . . .)

So what did I find while out and about?

NEW GOODIES

A few little treasures and trinkets . . . (or random junk, the definition is all subjective!)

Like a banjo back from Kenrick Antique Mall.  Maybe someday JT will find a neck and put the whole thing together.  For now I just like it’s shiny (and nearly impossible to photograph) wood grain and cool eagle graphic.

BANJO BACK

(PS – We had the backdrop all set up for an eBay photo shoot so I thought I would try out my thrift find photography too.  It’s an old bed sheet stretched across the fireplace and clamped with two C-clamps to either corner.  Pretty classy. )

What else?  A little trophy-esque urn planter from St. Vincent de Paul.  I need another planter like I need a hole in the head but I just couldn’t leave this guy behind.  Right now it’s sitting empty on the window sill and I love it even like that.

PLANTER

Some great fabric (about 2 yards and probably 54″ wide) also from St. Vincent de Paul on the same trip.  I had just left the dentist and thought I needed a little treat. . . . Am I the only one who goes thrifting as an antidote to the dentist? At any rate, pillows to follow!

FABRIC

And this cool Moravian Star light . . .

MOROVIAN STAR

It needs wiring and a good clean-up.  There is one little sliver of glass missing in one of the points but nothing major.  We looked at some places to put this up around the house during the great lamp debacle and I think it may be headed for the bedroom.  Considering they have a slightly larger one for sale at Shades of Light for $269 I think we got a steal!  The ladies checking out behind me at Value Village thought so too . . . I had to run out of there with my new light fixture pretty quick!

That’s my January thrifts — I’m going to try to steer clear for the rest of the month as I do a final purge of the house.  (And then, as usual when I drop off at Goodwill, I make my donation in the back and promptly walk around front and look through all their stuff for something new to drag home.  Oh well, maybe it’s a one in, one out situation.)

Speaking of one in, one out I also reposted the cute vinyl chair we had at the Green Shag Market sale on Craigslist.  The poor thing has been languishing in the basement holding up my wine shelves and it’s time for it to move on to a home free of chair-hoarders.  Do you want to adopt it?  Ad here.

PUT A SHEEPSKIN ON IT

Is this the lamp for me?

You guys, I had a folder all set up on my trusty little thumb drive, on which I transport around all my precious blog cargo, to post about my desperate quest for a lamp.  I figured if I posted up on the inter-webs what I was looking for, it would magically appear at my house.

LAMP NEEDED

Our living room has no ceiling light fixtures and so we rely on lamps for all of our light in this space.  Next to the “Man Chair” there was a space that needed some illumination.  But we also need a table there to set important things like wine glasses and remotes.  So I began a quest to find the perfect lamp, looking for images or items to add to my little blog folder and post for your perusal.  Items like these:

LAMP IDEAS

#1 Similar to a walnut one I spotted at Treasure Aisles Antique Mall.  It was too expensive . . . we left it behind. (Example image from 1st Dibs).  And it would still need a table . . . .

#2 Designed by Jonathan Adler for Lamps Plus . . . really too expensive, although it does have a drink holder.

#3 My retro dream – a tension mounted light fixture that would span from floor to ceiling.  With such a small footprint, I would find it a nice table.  Doesn’t it already look like it was photographed against our new dark grey wall? Sigh.

And then while scouting around the internet one day, I found this on World Market’s site.

CROSBY FROM WEB

Simple , clean lines and on sale for $50?  Includes table and lamp shade?  We went Friday night and scouted it out — we found it way separate from all the lighting, almost into the kitchen department.  So we scooped it up and brought it home before I ever had a chance to post my plight on the blog.

I like a lot of things about it (price, function, overall aesthetic) but I’m not 100% sold.  It’s just a teeny bit too tall and I worry that it competes with the other light fixtures in the room.

NEW LAMP IN SITU

(Oh and that’s JT’s latest eBay item just lounging in the living room, like guitars do.)

Here are the other major light fixtures :

1) Pendant above dining room table, just adjacent.  These two shades actually play well together.

LIGHT FIXTURE AT DINING

2) Brassy arc lamp with pretty wood base across the room.

ARC LAMP AND BASE

My other thought rather than ditching the new light is maybe to hit brassy light with some nice black spray paint . . . is this sacrilegious?

So — let’s vote!  Either we A) Return the World Market lamp and keep looking and hope that tension pole retro fixture magically is delivered to our front door or B) spray paint the arc lamp black that I scored at auction last year.  Or maybe you have a write-in ballot C option for me?  Thanks for playing!  Cheers – CT

Resolutions – To Keep or Not to Keep, That is the Question

Making New Year’s resolutions is right up my alley.  I mean it’s a list of things you want to accomplish.  And I am all about lists.  However, the point of writing a list is also checking things off said list and I’m not always so great at the follow-through.  So let’s check up on 2012.  I created a “Twelve for 2012” list of things I wanted for last year.

Blog Related:
1.  Write an average (minimum) of 2 posts per week.  One caveat though — I only want to post (what I think) is interesting and relevant stuff.  So if there isn’t anything interesting to blog about, no blog post.

So close!  We had 102 new posts last year, which if you divide by 52 weeks in a year comes out to about 1.96 blog posts per week.  Two more posts and I would have hit it.  Although this was a minimum so . . . I’ll let you guys be the judge of that.

2.  Grow the blog.  I’d like to get Living Analog recognized on a larger scale and maybe get a project featured on Apartment Therapy or Design*Sponge.  This goes back to #1.  If it’s not interesting, the big dogs aren’t going to be interested.

I count this as a sort of.  The kitchen project was on The Kitchn, a division of Apartment Therapy for the Small Cool Contest.  The sort of caveat is that I entered it in . . .

KITCHEN RECAP

3.  Fine tune the blog to make it user-friendly and rocking.  (Any suggestions on what this means to anyone who reads this is greatly and humbly appreciated.)

Not really much work has been done here except to continue posting as much unique content as we can produce.

4.  Tempt JT into doing guest blogs once a month.  If anyone has good suggestions on how to induce one’s husband to blog, I’m all ears.

JT has started to rack up some blog entries with all his guitar buying shenanigans.  I think we’ve seen that this can oftentimes drive interested parties to his eBay store and that’s always a good thing.

LOTS O GUITARS RECAP

Project Related:
5.  The Kitchen.  ’Nuff said.

KITCHEN RECAP

Yes!!!  I love that little kitchen.  There’s some TLC/TCB things that need to happen in here in 2013 but it is still working great.

6.  The Bedroom.

Fail.  All that got done in 2012 is some partial painting. 2013!

DURING RECAP

6.  The basement closet — this project has been waiting in the wings for about a year.  It’s now or never.

Done.  I never posted an “after” after because it wasn’t really so pretty once I filled it up with clothes.  But I’ve been loving having a place to put everything, and to be able to hang it up in color order! (Yes I’m a freak like that!)

BASEMENT CLOSET RECAP

7.  Living Room – besides the new daybed/sofas I blogged about earlier (Note: starting in December 2011!) there are some other furniture and miscellaneous fine tunings I’d like to accomplish in there.

Started . . . this will continue into 2013!

LR RECAP

Life/Self Related: 8.  Read one book a month.  I love to read but I will stay up for three days straight and not pay attention to anything else around me when I start a new book.  So as a result, I tend to re-read old classics so I can get to bed at a normal time.  I am currently on my 4th or so perusal of Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility” and have read “Pride and Prejudice” at least 15 times.  “Persuasion” is my favorite Austen novel which I have probably only read 4 or 5 times.  So.  New books.  January will be “Like Water for Chocolate”.

Another sort of.  To be continued in my 2013 resolutions. . .

9.  Guitar chords.  I’m hoping that 2012 will bring me the JT-made Explorer I’ve been waiting so patiently for.  In order to be at all deserving I need to practice.  A lot.  I’m shooting for once a week.

Nope. Fail.  It’s now or never baby!

10.  Dinner Parties.  JT and I are homebodys and we don’t get out much.  A lot of my close friends live out-of-state sadly enough (for me).  I’d like to try to host at least three dinner parties and two brunches this year (St. Louisans do not value brunch like they should, it’s the most awesomest meal ever).  I’m hoping once the kitchen is “done”, I’ll be more apt to invite people around.

We did really good on brunches in 2012 and a few casual meals at the end of the year.  Having a completed kitchen has helped (I noticed the light fixture was still all wonky on my brunch picture below).  Now on to the dinner parties.  And I need to prepare a little earlier so I can really photograph and document these things.

BRUNCH SETUP RECAP

11.  Participate in a outside-of-work money-making opportunity like the Rock and Roll Craft Show or a Flea Market to whittle down all the furniture/crafts I have stashed in the basement and maybe pave the way for the future “Thompson Guitar and Thrift” store that husband and I will run someday.

Yes!  We did the Green Shag Market Parking Lot sale in October.  I cleared a lot of stuff out of the basement and it felt so good.

THE SPOT RECAP

12.  Attempt to upholster a piece of furniture.  Attempt.

Yes, I did attempt an upholstery job on a crazy chair I found clawed up in the alley.  It did not go so great (some visible upholstery nails on the backside) so I sold that puppy at the Green Shag sale for $7 with a full disclosure of its sordid past.  But I’m glad I tried it out on something I wasn’t so emotionally attached to.  I want to try a few more in 2013. . .

UPHOLSTER SOMETHING RECAP

So that’s the resolution recap.  I’m not a math genius but I’m giving myself a 7.5 out of 12.  And that’s pretty good for me.  Also 2012 saw a Phase I Bathroom project that wasn’t on the original list along with so many other adventures.

BATHROOM RECAP

See what I’ve got cooking for 2013 . . . resolutions to follow.  What are your resolutions? Some of my favorite I have seen so far around the interwebs are from AB Chao, creator of Design Camp and Dewit. (Check out her resolutions here.)  They are so simple and to the point.  My list is already much longer . . . maybe I need to pare down!  Off to edit.  Cheers – CT

Living Analog has been around for a year and a half now (in this format) and we have met some great people here on these interwebs.  I want to introduce you to a few great blogs that have supported us in the last year by adding us to their blogroll – you know, the little sidebar that suggests other blogs to check out.  These bloggers were also nice enough to answer a few questions for me so please browse on over to their blogs and see what is going on in the neigborhood!

1) Do you have one piece of furniture that you will always keep no matter what? If so what is it?
I guess I will always want to keep our Eames Sofa Compact and our Poul Kjærholm PK55 dining table.  We waited 8 years to get that table and I imagine it’s something we could never part with.
2) What is your dream piece of furniture that you would own if money and time and space were no object?
As for my “dream piece”.  Honestly there’s nothing we wish for right now.  I do want a George Nelson dresser for the bedroom but that’s something totally doable.  Now that we’ve found a real Barcelona chair it’s been crossed off my list too.  We’ve been collecting for over 20 years so our once long list of “someday we’ll have” is pretty much crossed off.  Wow, that’s a trip to type!  We’re freakin’ exhausted!!!
3) Why do I blog?
Well, lately I haven’t been.  HA HA HA!  Kidding.  Seriously, I started the blog so family and friends could keep track of all the crazy work we were facing with this house.  I knew that it would be taking all of my free time and I wanted my friends and family to really understand and see for themsleves just what we were getting ourselves into and to keep some type of “journal” for myself.  When you’re in the thick of it day to day you forget just how much you’ve really accomplished.  The blog always helps me stay motivated.  Over the holidays I sat down and looked back at the last year and thought “DAMN, we really kicked butt”!  It’s always good to do that. I continue to blog for the same reasons.  I love all the new online friends I’ve made from all over the world but honestly the reasons for doing it remain the same.

1) Do you have one piece of furniture that you will always keep no matter what? If so what is it?
I have a Jens Risom credenza that I got for an incredibly low price, and it will follow me wherever I go! It was my first really good piece of mid-century furniture.

2) What is your dream piece of furniture that you would own if money and time and space were no object?
If time, money and space were no object, I’d love to own the huge six-bay teak wall unit designed by Poul Cadovius that my son-in-law has for sale at the store. It’s gigantic…but it’s so beautiful. He will sell separate bays, so I’m very tempted to see what kind of deal he’d give me on two or three for the new apartment.
3) Why do you blog?
Hmmmm…why do I blog? That’s a great question. I absolutely love mid-century and modern design, and I’m retired, which gives me a good bit of spare time to write. Since I’m a former high school English teacher, that’s an activity which is dear to my heart, so I can combine my two passions and lend a little support to the family store at the same time. It almost seems like it was meant to be!

1) Do you have one piece of furniture that you will always keep no matter what? If so what is it?

Buffet and dining set my dad made which fits perfectly in our tiny dining space.

2) What is your dream piece of furniture that you would own if money and time and space were no object?

I love Broyhill Brasilia but our house is small. I scour ebay and craigslist for the perfect piece.

3) Why do you blog?

Because I honestly love midcenturymodern and remodeling. I also enjoy the challenge of writing and traffic driving. And a big benefit that keeps me going is other blogger colleagues that I have met along the way!

1) Do you have one piece of furniture that you will always keep no matter what? If so what is it?

Used to, I’d have said “yes, my Selig ‘Z’ chair.  It’s what I consider one of the finest distilations of the Danish modern lounge chair designs.”  But for realz, everything has it’s price.  Offer me enough greenbacks or the right trade and it…or anything else…is yours!  Does that make me a slut?

2) What is your dream piece of furniture that you would own if money and time and space were no object?

Gosh, I hate to sound so pedestrian given all the world of vintage modern to choose from but I gotta stick with a true vintage (late ’50s through, what? early ’80s) Brazilian Rosewood and black leather Eames / Herman Miller Lounge Chair (670) and Ottoman (671).  There are, of course, hundreds upon hundreds of other sofas, cocktail tables, lounges, dining suits et al that I could drop here, but the classic Eames Lounge and Ottoman are ALWAYS on my radar.  But I’m not so much interested in just plopping down the dosh for one and suddenly having it.  The hunt for one at a bargain price is at least 2/3s the fun!

3) Why do you blog?  And more importantly, how do you manage one blog post a day all while holding down a full-time job and curating an antique mall booth?

I publish my blog because I wanted a blog like mine out there.  There are lots of bloggers out there who blog about much of the same stuff as I, but I wanted more.  I love magazines like Atomic Ranch but it is only published FOUR times a year!  I got really sucked into the blog RetroRenovation when I found it a few years ago and a big part of why was that Pam (the blog author) posted mostly daily.  Also I found myself highly intrigued by a Youtube vlogger called Shaycarl and his Youtube channel: Shaytards.  Shaycarl took upon the challenge of posting a vlog every day for a year.  I was mesmerized by his charm and commitment to his product.  And he’s funny as h*ll!  That’s when I realized the secret to readership is blogcasting daily.  Posting daily is a challenge…and is becoming more challenging every day as I take on more projects.  I’ve missed a few days here and there but only for illness.  How do I manage?  Commitment…and backup plans!  If I don’t have something interesting to blog about (relative, I know!) I can always fall back on an episode of “Not My Turf”!  I’ve actually been flirting with the idea of farming out weekend posts or finding a blog partner who can do a day or two…but I’d really have to deal with some control issues for that to work out!

And because the questions sounded kind of fun, I thought I would chip in . . .

1) Do you have one piece of furniture that you will always keep no matter what? If so what is it?

DESK IN LIMBO

Right now I would have to say that the one piece of furniture in our home with the most sentimental value is the little desk that is currently serving as my dressing table in the bedroom (Yes, I have been watching too much Downton Abbey and I’m okay with that.)  I rescued it from the curb outside my friend Jess’s house during college and then did a total remodel on it.  I stripped it, sanded it, and stained it the color it is now.  My dad helped me reglue and clamp the drawers and he cut and attached a new back panel for me.  He also helped me put the new hardware on — we had to drill all new holes.  My dad passed away suddently in 2004 (we probably worked on this in maybe 2002 or so?  Not sure.) and this desk is a good memory of some time we spent together and how patiently he helped me achieve my goals.

If you haven’t seen the online magazine Lonny yet, you should check it out sometime.  I saw this:

DESK IN A DESK

And immediately thought of my desk.  Wouldn’t that be such a cool update for it someday? (Photos by Patrick Cline, interior design by Matthew Kowles) Because in reality, my desk is not the coolest desk ever — the kneehole is super small and only fits that amazing little Lucite and white vinyl stool.  There’s no maker’s mark or any designer provenance.  So I love how the glass top and chrome legs remake this piece into something really  unique and a little more useable.

2) What is your dream piece of furniture that you would own if money and time and space were no object?

Because I wrote the question, I can also kind of cheat the system.  Because the dream piece of furniture I would choose would be a conversation pit.  Like this lovely:

4 miller house 1957

Built into the amazing Miller House and designed by Eero Saarinen. (Image from here.)  So, really by choosing this “piece”, I would get this house.  And it’s amazing!

3) Why do you blog?

I started Living Analog as a creative outlet from my daily design job.  Working for a commercial design firm is my chosen profession but it is not often I get to see my very own ideas through to fruition.  I persuaded JT to contribute to the blog with his guitar stories.  One of the few classes  that JT and I actually took together in high school was a creative writing class so a blog seemed like a great venture for us.  I’ve enjoyed the things that blogging has brought to my life: increased accountability to complete projects, a forum to discuss ideas for projects in the works and most importantly the connection it has created for us to the blogging community.  I wasn’t expecting that and it has been so enjoyable.

So thanks again to Stacey and Richie, Dana, Rebecca and Mister Modtomic for their support of this little ol’ blog.  It means so much!  Cheers – CT

January – Time for changes, even if little

A new year means a new fridge right?  Not quite.  The one we bought with the house is still chugging along and while I’d love to chuck it into the alley sometimes, I just can’t quite reconcile myself with replacing something that is working.

But I did tweak the big ugly blank side of the fridge last May with some craft paper.  (See the whole post here.) My how time flies when you’re having fun.  And as the time has passed, so has the paper worn.  Turns out paper and water droplets (from the hand drying towel hanging there) don’t really mix so well . . . .

SIDE BY SIDE

I was still reluctant to actually paint the fridge with chalkboard paint instead so I ordered a roll of contact paper that is also a chalkboard surface from Amazon.  The roll wasn’t nearly as wide as the paper was which I don’t love but until I can get on board with painting the fridge (or buying a Smeg!), this is what we get.  There were a few air bubbles that didn’t come all the way out but it was a pretty simple install process.  It was definitely a two-man job though — JT and I took turns holding the bottom away from the fridge while the other smoothed out the contact paper with a large piece of sample laminate I had on hand.

FULL NEW

I think the contact paper chalkboard could be a great option for renters who don’t like the look of a door or cabinets — just stick a chalkboard on it (the new version of put a bird on it!).

Since the chalkboard paper was sticky-backed it freed up a bunch of our heavy-duty magnets to stick some more knives and utensils to the side of the fridge.  I gave them a crime scene-esque chalk outline so we’d know which one was in use or in the dishwasher.  Now that the holidays are behind us, we’ve been cooking at home a lot and from scratch, so having these knives within easy reach is great.  We also got a juicer and started down that path so many, many fruits and vegetables are being murdered in our kitchen.

NEW CLOSE UP2

JT wrote a little note to the dogs down at the bottom reminding them to behave.  I got very different results when I tried to coax them into modeling for the blog: Sophie was terrified and Shenanigan was nonchalant and/or impatiently waiting for the treat I bribed them with.

DOGS BY FRIDGE

Little dude had to go to the vet on Saturday because we found a weird bulge on his side.  Turns out it’s a fatty but benign tumor.  Sophie’s been having problems with one of her back legs that the vet said is exacerbated by her weight so it looks like both dogs will be on the eating healthy bandwagon with us in 2013!  Good thing that the kitchen is fine-tuned and ready to go.  I’ve been doing a little work to the pantry as well and that will be an up and coming post.  Have a great week everyone!  Cheers – CT

2013: The Year of Wine

So I think we are fast forwarding through the holiday recap.  I mean, they’re done.  Gifts were given and received, food was made and (hopefully) enjoyed and fun was had by all.

JT AND CT

(Here we are at church on Christmas Eve.  Sit up straight girlfriend! See — trying to be in more pictures equals total fail.  But I’m posting it so maybe not a total fail.)

At the end of the day Christmas had me a little worn out.   It’s definitely first world problems — we have three houses to go to and three sets of presents to distribute and open, three meals to eat . . . there are way worse things in the world to have to contend with.  But the thought of spending the holidays poolside on a cruise ship or nestled into a ski lodge with just the husband always pops up in my mind as we hustle and bustle back and forth down the highway from one house to another.

Here's where Shenanigan crashed after Christmas.

Here’s where Shenanigan crashed after Christmas.

So in an effort to relax and unwind a little more and not let the stresses get at me so much, I declared 2013 the Year of Wine.  My family was happy to comply and we were stocked up and ready to go . . . .with no real place to keep all this great fermented grape juice. I also paid a first-time visit to St. Louis Cellars for a few more . . . just in case we ran out.

They happened to be having a bubbly tasting that day (it was December 31st) so had got a bottle of Luxe for our New Year’s Eve AND 8th Wedding Anniversary celebration.

I did navy blue nails for NYE. Blue's my color for sure.

I did navy blue nails for NYE. Blue’s my color for sure.

And yes those are our party favors from 8 years ago.  The loudest party horns known to man (and frightening to animals).  But back to the matter at hand.  Storing all this great wine.

When I started rearranging things all over the house, I had a plan for where I wanted to hang the Ikea Lack floating wall shelves.  Well I “shelved” that plan and focused on this wall instead:

(The wall with art that was an anniversary gift!) Along came a handy template for hanging purposes:

TEMPLATING

And now the Year of Wine can begin.

AFTER

The wine rack was a wedding gift from friends and has been hiding in the basement waiting for a good spot to live in our tiny house.

FINAL CLOSE UP

My plan is to sip a little vino and relax in the evenings.  I guess husband will be drinking the whisky because I haven’t acquired those taste buds yet.  If you have a minute, hop over to “From the Right Bank” and read Ally’s post about living La Belle Vie and enjoying everyday moments.  It’s important to slow down and appreciate what is happening around us.  That’s what I’ll be doing when I sip my wine. Savoring my surroundings and my time with family and friends.  What will you be doing in 2013?  Whatever it is, be sure to sip, savor and enjoy!  Cheers – CT

Stove Saga

In some ways, the kitchen has been “done” since we tiled the floors and then finished painting the walls, cabinets and trim back in May.  However a new stove is being delivered and installed today, making this the 4th stove in our little kitchen in one year.  Crazy right?

We started out with the gem:

NUMBER 1

It came with the house.  It was disgusting and never clean and when a mouse found his way into our house, he decided the stove would be a good place to live.  So naturally when we planned to re-tile/spiff up the kitchen, this stove was history.

Cue Stove #2:

NUMBER 2

Based on what was going on with Stove #1 and the age of the house, we assumed there wasn’t any electrical in the wall behind for power to the stove (Stove #1 was gas).  So we found a decent replacement on Craigslist that was all gas.  Having only had electric ranges growing up, I didn’t realize an all gas stove would essentially be hot on the top all the time (the pilot lights just flame away beneath the metal all the time).  Not so cool.  (Literally and figuratively.)  And when we demoed out Stove #1 and did our floor re-tile we found that there was a power outlet back there that we never even dreamed existed.

So.  Stove #3.  Also from Craigslist. (Stove #2 made it’s exit via Craigslist as well, on to better and brighter things in a rental apartment.)

NUMBER 3

Newer-ish, gas but with some electric features like a clock and such.  Guess what.  Those are the features that can and will die before the stove ever does.

And that’s what happened.  About a month ago, we started getting a “F10” error on the display and then the stove would shut off.  Really fun when you’re trying to make a “big ass” birthday brunch for your whole family.  It turns out either the wiring harness or a sensor was shot or the stove really was overheating.  We turned off the electric to it and have just been using the range top for the last month with the help of a large lighter to fire it up.  Not the end of the world but it’s amazing how many recipes you find that require an oven WHEN YOURS DOESN’T WORK!!

So Stove #4 is being delivered today, husband is at home waiting for it as I type. Lesson learned: Sometimes the “list” isn’t always the place to shop for things that might be better with a warranty.

I am making these brownies to inaugurate Stove #4 tonight:  THE BEST SALTED CARAMEL BROWNIES YOU’LL EVER HAVE found via A Cup of Jo (recently stumbled upon and loving).  Wouldn’t everything be better with sea salt?

However if you should be oven-less for a month and be desperately searching for good range top recipes, try this one: Winter Vegetable Hash.  I’m snacking on the leftovers for lunch right now and it is so yummy.  (Also made better with sea salt . . . I sense a trend.) Yukon Gold potatoes are my new best friend.  Until I meet my brownies tonight.

Have a great weekend and bake lots of yummy things! Like a lot of things in this life, you never miss your stove ’til its gone.  Cheers – CT

Decorating for Christmas, Part Two

Our first Christmas card arrived the other day and I was so excited to put it up on the mirror like last year.  I’m hoping more are on their way . . .

OVERALL MANTEL

If they’re not it’s because we haven’t sent out cards at all, mainly because it’s just the husband and I, and no one wants to see our mugs year after year.  But we wanted a picture to sent to JT’s grandma this year and came to find that really we haven’t taken many of just the two of us in the last almost eight years of marriage. . . . something that will need to be remedied soon.  The photographer who did my sister’s engagement photos was really great . . . .

Also some presents are wrapped! Sticking with my “white and bright” theme, I picked up a roll of plain white wrapping paper.  I still need to add some embellishments in the form of tags and ribbon and then they will be all done!   I wish I could say we’re all done with shopping but that’s never the case.  There’s always someone a little trickier to buy for. (You know who you are.)

While putting up our decorations this year, there was one spot that felt a little bare.  While browsing through my daily Google Reader feed a few days ago, I saw a wreath that reached out of the computer screen and pulled me in.  I HAD to have it.  Immediately.  I haven’t felt the urge to acquire something that strongly in a while.  Check out this post on the Nesting Place here and see if you can spot what I spotted.

BARE SPOT

Or . . .  I’ll just go ahead and show you what I did!

THE WREATH MAKES IT COMPLETE

I figured rather than buy, why not make!  I still had some paper left over from my punched dots garland and off I went.

TO MAKE

At first I thought I needed to get a wreath form or something more round to attach my paper leaves to but I still wanted the wreath IMMEDIATELY and didn’t necessarily want to start spending money on something I had already started for free.    So I used a large bowl and a little dessert plate to trace out my circles on cardboard.

HOT GLUE WARMS THE SOUL

My sisal rope from Home Depot is still going strong so I used that to hang it in what I’d like to consider a simple-yet-casual arrangement.  There was one spot on the wreath that was a little flattened out already from my learning curve as I glued the leaves down so I looped the twine around that section.

CLOSE UP

I also had a couple of sections of white twinkle lights left over from my teenage years when Leonardo DiCaprio was Romeo and Claire Danes was Juliet and I listened to Sarah McLachlan a lot in my bedroom.  You know, the nineties.  I wrapped them up into a little white light twinkle ball and nonchalantly set that on the window ledge to complete the holiday decorating.

I still had one other task at hand — that pesky green painters tape I used to rig up the mantel.  After a quick trip to Target (kidding – when is it ever a quick trip!) I had my white duct tape and fixed up the mantel.

WHITE DUCT TAPE SAVES THE DAY

Doesn’t it look like I photoshopped that picture or something!  It’s magical!  And then . . . I saw something else  I could use the white duct tape for . . . at guess where . . . . The Nesting Place.  Check it out – this is next.  Watch out mantel!

Alvarez Prototype Semi-hollow Electric Guitar

Saint Louis has it share of rock & roll instrument history, thanks in no small part to Saint Louis Music, who over the years have brought us brands like Ampeg, Crate and Alvarez.

alvarez advert

Alvarez is an odd brand in particular. They are almost always solidly built, and cheap as hell. But, they suck to look at. Boring design. Pisses me right off. There is simply no excuse for boring, bland design when you’re dealing with something that you present live or record with. Probably why they aren’t respected as well as they could be.

SIDE ANGLE

Which brings us to this find I made last year- caught my eye on Craigslist. It was super cheap and looked amazing. The gentleman selling it works for STL Music, and informed me that it’s a prototype. One of only 2 or 3 made (same design but different colors) they were built by Alvarez to send out to their biggest dealers, in an effort to test the market. Sadly, Alvarez ditched more classic, cool designs like this, in favor the now laughable super-strat, heavy metal designs that fizzled away once the hair bands started hitting the methadone clinics.

CLOSE FRONT

But wow, is this thing cool. The build is crisp, and the finish is beautiful. Honestly, one of the most incredible sounding and feeling guitars I have encountered. Doesn’t hurt that it has two Seymour Duncan designed humbuckers- one of which is the coveted Seth Lover model (bridge position).

To me, this treasure, this haunting, screaming muse is a sad, rare ghost of what could have been at Alvarez. Most working musicians cannot afford the high end Gibson/Guild/Gretsch hollow-body designs. This could have worked so incredibly well for so many folks I have met and listened to, who are world class musicians, but commonly are forced to save for years in order to posses a guitar that is worthy of their abilities.

Looking for the right home. See it on Ebay here.

P.S.- next long-term is a 60’s Fender Champ Lap Steel. Going to take a while, as I have to find the bridge/pickup assembly. Got it off a old country boy out in Troy, MO. I get a lot of instruments from these older guys out in the country, who bought them new way back in the day, but don’t have the market locally to sell them. They have a nephew post to Craigslist for them, and I can usually jump on them before most even see the post. Fun for me, though. I speak their language. I’m 100% hillbilly, going back about 200 years.
