Has everyone done their Christmas Good Deed?

With all the celebrating that goes on this time of year, I realize again and again how lucky I am.  When the holidays roll around, I always wish I had more time to volunteer — maybe that will be one of my resolutions for 2012.  However, I still like to find other ways to give and do my Christmas Good Deed.

This year’s Christmas Good Deed is sending a twelve-year-old girl in Foster Care to the City Museum.  If you’ve never been to the City Museum, it’s amazing — a visual wonderland of junk crafted together into a playground for kids of all ages.

So when I saw that the Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition was granting children’s “Little Wishes” (their big wish is to be adopted), and that one little girl was interested in the City Museum, I was all in.  They still have a lot more wishes to fill  — it’s fun, being someone’s fairy godmother in a way.

Another great charity to consider supporting is the one where we got our very own Sophie dog (once named Butterfinger, you can read her rescue story here), Stray Rescue.  Not many animal shelters actively feed and rescue street dogs, have a hospice program to give dogs a quality end of life and help nurse so many animals back from death’s door.

This is Daddy Lab (before and after), a rescue from a few years ago.  It’s amazing the number of animals Stray Rescue brings in that are so emaciated and ill like this — and they all turn out to be happy, healthy dogs who make great pets.  Stray Rescue has received a $100,000 matching donation from an anonymous “fairy godmother” for the Stracks Fund.

The Stracks Fund goes to cover medical expenses for dogs like Daddy Lab.  Stray Rescue spends up to $150,000 PER MONTH on medical care for their animals — they get the best care possible.  So as our second Christmas Good Deed, we are also donating to the Stracks Fund.

What’s your Christmas Good Deed?  Mine is definitely small fries in the grand scheme of things but it feels like my cosmic thank you to the universe for all my blessings.  (Cheesy but true).

On a Christmas Crafting update, I am stalled.  But, I may have invented a new crochet “thing” to be revealed at a later date that will make me a fortune.  Probably not.  But if it does make me a fortune, I will be able to do so many more Christmas Good Deeds!!  More updates soon — the Christmas tree went up!  Going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark has not made for any good picture-taking time at home.

Behind an Eight Ball

You guys, I am so behind!!  We have less than 30 days to Christmas and I have just completed ONE of the NINE things I told myself I had time to make.  Granted #2 is about 75% done, but it is time for Pedal to the Metal.

In case anyone was wondering what to get ME for Christmas, I saw this great article a while ago on Apartment Therapy for the “cash strapped collector“.  It’s an interesting list of 10 classic items for under $200.  Actually I heard Santa may be bringing me a new camera.  Three cheers for better pictures on this fricking blog!

I’ll report back if and when I get anything done I can share around here.  At some point I’ll have to decorate for the holidays. I’m thinking of borrowing a few ideas from Emily Henderson’s holiday “Secrets from a Stylist” episode.

Namely this —

We’ll see how it translates.  Love the wall color!  Teal/sapphire blue and lime green and white and wood?  Don’t mind if I do.

“I’m A Giant!” Doll House (small) update

I have been woefully behind on any and all things doll house  related.  Emily Henderson posted an update on her blog of all the blog-land participating in the doll house challenge and there’s a lot of people out there killing it pretty good. Not so much here.  But I promised an update, so here’s what I got:

Floor plans!

I think because I work a lot of most days in AutoCAD it is hard for me to plan a space without a floor plan.  Having the dimensions of the space set down and available for on-screen twiddling makes the whole process a lot clearer to me.  So you’ll see I gave each space a purpose (bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and so on).

However the space (left over and) intended for the bathroom didn’t quite function as is.

With the current roof pitch, I could just get my giant-sized hand in there and that’s about it.  I googled some doll house images and saw that a lot of doll houses are more “cut off” in the back and I didn’t necessarily need this return roof slope.

So I got out our smallest tack hammer and gently pried that piece out.  Voila — doll house bathroom!

I’m going to take the piece of material I removed from the roof and use it to create a back wall for the bathroom.  I need to shave it down a little first so it will fit into the space.  Next up is the bigger span of roof return on the rest of the house.  However, the work table I am using in the basement is in the one area with absolutely zero light (excuses, excuses, right? Right!) and so I need to remediate that situation this weekend before any further doll house progress can be made.

And because it must be said, there is a person on Etsy selling the little white plastic supports that come in your pizza box as doll house tables.  It says so right in the item description.  Crazytown.

I’ll leave you on that bomb shell.  Have a great weekend folks!

Thankful

Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching (yay!) and I have so much to be thankful for.  For one thing, this tiny blog has reached 1,000 total page views  after 60 posts.  Thanks for reading everyone!

This small milestone in my new blogger life got me to thinking about all the projects I have yet to finish and all those I would like to start.  There’s a lot.  Maybe too many.

Here’s the part where I scare away all you readers I worked to entertain.  The basement.

Yes, this is my very own basement in my very own house.  This is one of the many jumbled furniture piles I have down in said basement.  Run away screaming now.

I did a quick inventory to see how bad it really was . . .  It’s official, I may  be eligible for Hoarders on A&E.

Here’s the shame:
2 ottomans – 1 with a wood frame and one fully upholstered
Full size bed upholstered headboard
2 wood lounge chairs with strap seats – 1 with cushions, 1 without any
Slat Nelson-esque end table to match the one I have upstairs in the living room
Armoire in the process of being painted to go up in the bedroom
1 side table that I half-stripped green paint off of and need to finish
1 dining Captain’s Chair
3 vintage wood folding card chairs and a wood folding table
1 white bamboo side table
1 large lamp shade  that I spray-painted black and is waiting for a base
Base of the dining table  (I swapped it because the 4 legged base wouldn’t slide under the banquette)
A white Formica kitchen table (it used to have two chairs but I craigslisted them)
My childhood (child-sized) rocking chair
Mahogany cabinet that used to hold the old big (pre-flat screen) TV upstairs
2 flowered upholstered chairs waiting for their turn in the music room
4 wood folding chairs for use with a 5 foot folding table for dinner parties
2 wood TV trays that used to be bedside tables in our first apartment

So onward and upward.  Hopefully I can conquer this basement in the next 60 posts, right?  Part of the impetus for me to start blogging was to take a small step towards my dream of the “Thompson Guitar and Thrift” store.  After my basement inventory, I might almost be ready for an antique mall booth or an eBay store as a starting point.

And speaking of projects that I start but don’t finish: The Dollhouse!!!  I’m working on it and should be back this week with a (little) update.  Don’t get too excited — not a lot has changed, but I am working on it slow but steady.

Thanks again for reading my ramblings and assailing your eyes with images of my half-finished projects.  It means the world to me.  I’m an avid blog reader myself and would love to hear of any other good blog recommendations you may have.  Cheers!

One of these things is not like the other . . .

I’ve mentioned before my complete and inexplicable love of sheepskins.  I am a vegetarian (sort of – fish, dairy and eggs all make their way onto my plate) but somehow I can’t seem to reconcile this with my love of animal skins.  Maybe vintage animal skins make it okay?  Like if the animal died over 30 years ago and I’m just “recycling” it to keep it out of the landfill?

Thankfully on our marathon one day IKEA trip, I found a faux answer.

The nice thing about the faux sheepskins is that they are listed as washable.  Which is good because Sophie really goes to town on those bones and the after result is not pretty.  So I had already washed that one a few times but left it out to air dry based on the tag’s directions.

Then one morning we discovered one of the dogs had PEED on their nice sheepskin and scrunched it into a ball while trying to hide the evidence.  No one has fessed up yet as to who the culprit is. (They don’t seem too concerned with it actually.  Maybe because they’re dogs.)

So it got washed again, in hot water this time AND put through the dryer.

So now I have all three kinds of sheeps living in one room — the real one I put on the Lucite computer stool, the faux (non-washed) un-doggified ones I have on the dining room bench seating as well as on the white vinyl side chair and the curly sheep (faux that’s been washed) stayed on the floor for the dogs to destroy a little more.  What spoiled dogs.

Happy Halloween!

I got bit by the “craft” bug this weekend and jumped past Halloween straight to Christmas and beyond . . . .

I saw this tutorial on How About Orange for paper lantern/ball thingys.  I’m picturing about twenty more strung together to make a funky garland.  I might even use the white Christmas lights and make them into glowing lanterns.

It was pretty easy, just some quick paper cutting, a few hole punches and a brad — voila paper lantern.  I picked out a few more pretty papers at Hobby Lobby and think I might use up the rest of my paint swatches as well.

Next I tried out some crochet fun . . . .

Eight loops of a “chain link” type necklace thingy done while watching the Cardinals victory parade. (See the tutorial here.)  Yes the Cardinals are World Champions!!  (or at least Champions of the USA and Canada, but we’ll take it.  I’m using this as my excuse for why I didn’t get a lot of other things done this weekend . . . .any one else buying it?  If so, you are probably a Cards fan too.)

Shenanigan was also in a non-productive mood . . .

Considering this dog is about one foot tall, he sure is long. While Shenanigan snoozed, Sophie tried on her princess tiara Halloween costume.

Happy Halloween everyone!  That means it is closer to Christmas and I can put up my new decorations!

Friday Fun = Furniture

I am working over here you guys, I swear.  But a furniture rep dropped by with these for our office (temporarily) and I had to share.

The kids Panton chairs!  The Eames elephant!  What every design snob parent needs to raise their kids up right, right?  Right.

I snooped through my Ideas and Inspiration file real quick (cause I’m working!)  and pulled up an image I have of the adult Panton chair.

It’s from the home of Wes and Kayla, two Apartment Therapy bloggers.  Can you imagine that with a little “Mommy and Me” desk next to it with the child’s version?  I die a little.  It’s not quite doll house sized like the “I’m a Giant” challenge I started in on, but children’s scale furniture is pretty freakin’ cute.  Good thing we’re about to start on a bunch of early childhood centers at work — I can get my fill of little tiny furniture!

Happy Friday!

PS – The carpet under the uber-adorable elephant is Interface Anagrams.  Remember my love letter here?  Yep.

Fall’s First Fire

It finally kicked into fall weather in St. Louis and that meant one thing — time to open up the ol’ flue and have a FIRE!  We still have enough firewood left over from last year that I don’t think we’ll have to scavenge any but I want to know where all the designers get their piles and piles of pretty birch logs you see in the magazine images. I think we only get oak in Missouri.

At any rate, it wasn’t the largest fire but Sophie seemed to enjoy it (and her bone — that girl loves her some bone).

The Cardinals were on TV, winning the World Series (we hope),  so JT and the fur kids and I all settled in for a nice evening in front of the fire.

With two dogs and a husband on the sofa, there wasn’t a whole lot of room for me.  No sweat, I took over the (faux) sheepskin in front of the fire and crocheted my heart out.  I’m moving at a turtle’s pace on the crochet thing, but at least I’m still moving.  Here’s my progress on the second panel as of last night.

I keep all my yarn in my great little Rock and Roll Craft Show bag I got last year. (This year’s show is November 25-27, check it out.)  I love the stitched guitar logo.  Plus I can pick it all up and stash it easily if I don’t want my yarn cluttering up the room.  Still three more panels to go after I finish this one and I’m thinking about doing another (different) blanket for the bedroom . . . so I best get a move on!  I guess this calls for more cozy nights in front of the fireplace.  Sounds alright by me.

I’m a Giant (Idiot)

When I saw the idea of decorating a doll house floating around the interwebs, started by Emily Henderson of HGTV’s “Secrets from a Stylist”,  it kind of clicked with me.

See, I knew there was an almost finished doll house sitting in a storage unit in the middle of nowhere waiting for someone to love it.

It was started by my grandfather for his growing family of granddaughters (7 granddaughters, one grandson, AKA “The Boy”)

Oh, Olan Mills, you never fail to delight.  But that’s a lot of girls, right?  When Grandpa passed away in 1996, my dad, the oldest son, took the doll house home.

Dad passed away in 2004 and now it has come to me, the oldest daughter and oldest granddaughter.  I don’t know that my dad ever did much to the doll house, he probably had enough on his hands trying to deal with three daughters.

So I think I owe it to my dad and grandpa to finish this thing off.  Thanks to my college experience, I did receive a grueling education in model-making.

There were many late nights spent with balsa wood and exacto-knives.

This one above was my senior thesis project, a modern art museum.  While the model is totally shredded, the floor plans don’t look too embarrassing to me like some of my other college portfolio does.  My dad died during my final senior semester and sometimes I’m amazed I finished this museum project at all.  I think the reality is I had every girl’s best angel looking out for her – her dad.

So, down to brass taxes, as my husband would say.  First I’ll need to space plan and layout out the whole thing (because I’m a nerd like that and need an overall plan before I can start moving forward on little pieces).  My main goal is to get the doll house structure finished and the interior surfaces finalized (paint, flooring).  Furniture can come and go, but it needs to be sturdy and safe for more little girls to play with if I want to do right by my father and grandfather.

I think I’ll need a couple of weeks for the exterior/structure
1.  Finish all the siding – cut and attach each piece
2. Paint siding (I’m thinking a dark warm grey)
3.  Finish shingles on roof (I’m thinking about leaving those natural).
4.  Clear coat roof?
5.  Cut all interior openings — doors from one room to another
6.  Trim all interior openings
7.  Adjust all floors/walls/ceilings
8.  Sand all interior floor/walls/ceilings
9.  Look at electrical/lighting options (do I even want to go there?)
10.  Paint interior walls and floors, decide flooring

But because I couldn’t resist, and because I wanted to be sure of the scale, I did buy a few little furnishing items.

An 80s bachelor man bathroom!  It was the best looking one I could find on Etsy.  I’m not sure if I’ll keep the fixtures black or what.  I think if the bathroom floor was a white mosaic tile with Carrera marble walls, a black bathroom set could be kind of sexy.  We’ll see.  I’ve also got my eye out for a kitchen appliance type set, as those two spaces (kitchen and bathroom) kind of need to get built-in with the “bones”, right?  Maybe that’s just architecture in the real world.

At any rate, I’m going to see what I can do to this baby.  I feel like it needs a name, like Frank Lloyd Wright had Taliesin (I just finished reading “Loving Frank”, can you tell?  Good book.)  I’ll post updates as I go along.  If I’m really going to do this I’m A Giant challenge, I definitely need to get moving!

I Survived IKEA – barely

This Saturday was the epic IKEA trip.  My mother, sister and I left St. Louis while it was still dark (5am) and headed northward to the great city of Schaumburg, Illinois.

We came, we shopped, we conquered.

I thought I was ready for this trip but it took every ounce of planning, preparation and group ninja shopping skills to pull this one off.

The store opened at 10am and we were in the more-than-half-full parking lot by 10:30, ready to go.  I saw cars from Wisconsin, Ohio, Iowa and Michigan besides the scores of Illinois plates and of course us with our Missouri-mobile.

We plunged right into the fray but didn’t make it more than halfway around the top floor (which we hit up first) before we decided to break for some Swedish lunch.

After trekking through the 3rd and 2nd floor, the three of us had three very full carts.  We decided to go on down to the check-out line and pay up for Round #1.

After off-loading Round #1, we went back for seconds.  The main floor has the warehouse aisles of all the furniture and items in boxes.  This part was a lot easier because our handy-dandy IKEA lists told us exactly what Aisle # and Bin # to look for.  So we swept through Round #2 in record time.

IKEA is nothing if not efficient but my one complaint would be at the end, we were herded like lemmings to a loading zone surrounded with rails that wouldn’t let the carts out.  So we were forced to bring the car up to the loading zone after each round of shopping.  We looked pretty hilarious trying to fit Round #2 (the bigger heavier furniture stuff) in UNDER our Round #1 (the lighter, more breakable, decorative stuff).  Maybe we would change the plan in retrospect and do the heavy stuff first.  Who knows.

We cruised back to STL as the day faded to dark.  JT helped us unload everything and I crashed and burned to an un-funny Saturday Night Live.  I awoke in the morning to the aftermath of what I had done.

Disaster zone!  While I was out shopping all Saturday, JT rewired and redid T001 to be an Esquire.  You can kind of see it hanging out over by all his amps and equipment which have been living in the living room since I still have the office/music room all tore up.

Mr. Shenanigan at least seems grateful for my IKEA finds.  They had some faux sheepskins!   I didn’t have to be a sheep murderer to have my house covered in furs.  Since the faux version was only $9.99, I grabbed up 4 rather than the real versions of which I had budgeted for 2 @ $29.99.  I saved $20 and got two more sheepskins than anticipated!  (Disclaimer:  I didn’t really SAVE money, I just tell myself that to make myself feel better.)

So Shenanigan and Sophie now have their own sheep friend to cuddle with.   In the picture above, Shenanigan is hanging out with his sheep friend (I call it Hairy Potter actually) and his “baby” which is actually a squirrel toy he alternately loves to cuddle or loves to destroy.  Maybe it’s the Rally Squirrel?  Cardinals move on to the World Series!!  More on how the IKEA finds slowly make their way into our house.  Have a great week folks!
