To Dye or Not to Dye

Now that the bedroom makeover is coming along, I need to face the drapery head on.  I’m embarrassed to even post a picture of what is there now, but I’m hoping the shame of this image will be a strong incentive to get something above and beyond to put in its place.  Here we go . . .

Gah.  It’s bad.  So bad.  They don’t touch the floor, they don’t start at the ceiling, the rod is so puny . . .  I could go on and on.   Now that we’ve put together the new bed with the nice new gray geometric sheets, the tan and white paisley is starting to feel a little out of place . . .

In an effort to save money, I am considering working with what I have (or some of it at least.)  After my pleasant run-in with iDye earlier this year, I’m thinking I might dye the panels to match more of the color scheme that I have going on in the room.  Then I want to mount the curtain rod higher, let out the bottom seam and add a color band to the bottom of the curtain to make it a proper size to address this wall.

The question is where to put the band . . .

On top, like this West Elm curtain?
Or . . .

On the bottom like this image from the Shade Store?  The Shade Store website actually has a nice tool to let you visualize different color combinations.  I like how the bottom panel lines up with the sill in the Shade Store image . . . I think that might be more my cup of tea (if I liked tea, which I do not!  That is definitely an acquired taste).

I think it might be time for another trip down to the Loop for a visit to my iDye supplier, Dick Blick.  Any votes on how to do the banding?  What about colors?  I’m thinking after all this time with white bedroom walls, it might be time for some color . . .

White is nice . . .

I don’t know if you guys have started to notice my obsession with the color white . . . .white vinyl chair, new white bed frame, white floating shelves.  When it comes to decorating, it’s hard to go wrong with white (or black or gray for that matter but that’s another story).  If I had some chutzpah, I would paint my floors white, like this great space from the now defunct Domino magazine.

But that’s a bigger commitment than I’m ready for.  What I did commit to is a new old chair (as if I didn’t have enough chairs) . . .

TFA — The Future Antique — recently relocated to Chippewa near to Ted Drewes.  It also happens to be very close to my mother-in-law’s place so when we were over for a visit the other day, I persuaded JT and his mom to pop in and have a look around with me.  TFA is not known for their bargain basement prices but they do get some amazing stuff so sometimes the higher tag is worth all the editing and hunting they do.

Do you see our chair in any of these pictures?  I do!

The images above are from their website — there is a vast and ever-changing selection of 50s and 60s awesome (and sometimes uber-kitschy) items available.   The fiberglass Eames wanna be was $40 and I just couldn’t leave it be.  I think it might end up as a vanity table chair in the bedroom or maybe it will go to the office for JT to use at his recording equipment.  We’ll see!

A new bed, hopefully no bed bugs

I thought the only way a new (actual) bed would come into the T’s house would be through months of pleas to JT for a trip to Ikea.  I have been scoping out options on the internet and looked at some things on our stop at the Atlanta Ikea.  I had it narrowed down to these two:

Due to the size of our house (800 sq. ft.!) and the itty-bitty closets people needed back in 1939, underbed storage seemed like a no-brainer.   Along with the function of underbed storage, the drawers will also prevent underbed dog hairball dustbunnies, another plus.

Then the bedroom remodel got thrown into high gear by a potential bed bug outbreak.  Yikes is right. (The exterminator came last night but it’s still not a confirmed bed bug situation).    It turns out having the box spring and mattress on the floor ain’t so good for keeping the bed bugs at bay.  JT, being practical and trying to avoid an Ikea trip (drive to Chicago and mucho shopping), suggested I look around the STL area for a bed we could both live with.

And lo and behold, what did I find?

The Chase collection at World Market.  Probably not the world’s finest furniture but it was affordable-ish at $499 and we wouldn’t have to drive for 10 hours to pick it up.  Once at the store, we found the only ones in-stock were white.  I could live with that.  I wasn’t sure I was too crazy about the faux-rich look of the dark woods.  Then, when we went to check out, we found out it was only $218.00!!!  Cheaper than any of my Ikea options not even including the gas it would take to get to Chicago and back.  We hurried around back, sure they would realize the mistake (or we would realize we accidentally bought a twin size!)

Somehow it all fit into our small SUV (Saturn Vue Hybrid) and we were off.   But . . . since Target was across the street, and I had just miraculously somehow saved $300 . . .  we ducked in for some new sheets!

Look — a pattern (small scale) and a color (sort of – light grey)

Now things are up in the air a little until we find out more about the dreaded bed bug situation and get the new frame assembled.  Until then, it’s a little bit of urban camping.
It looks like we have a 60 lb furry bedbug!  That’s Shenanigan trying out the new sheets.  The blanket is a crochet wonder that took me about 3 years to complete due to the small, tight stitches.  I’ve had it stored away for a while because the cool grey wasn’t fitting in with what we had going on in the bedroom. . . . now however with our new gray sheets, it looks pretty right on!
This is our “music room” which right now = the room JT stores all his amps and guitars in (and I store all the miscellaneous furniture items that are in limbo).  I also have a plan drawn up for it but with all the other changes we have going on right now, it got moved to the bottom of the list.

Bedrooms are Back

Here is my next installment of music turned room scene that I have lamely nicknamed “Set the Scene”.

Ione Skye’s bedroom, featured in Domino magazine.
Photo by Paul Costello, Domino, Sept. 2005.

You guys remember Ione Skye, right?  No?  Let me refresh your memory.

Okay, so that’s not her, but she was the actress receiving the boom box serenade from Mr. John Cusack (whom I love) AKA Lloyd Dobler in Say Anything.

This bedroom is so light and airy yet spirited and dare-I-say-funky that it’s a hard one to pass up.  Also, I am obsessed with bedroom images right now as I work furiously (at the pace of a 100-year-old tortoise) to reinvent/refresh/reinvigorate the JT/CT bedroom.

So, what music do you hear playing in this room?  For me, it’s the bad-ass Leona Naess song “Mayor of Your Town”.  You don’t want to piss this chick off . . . or get this song stuck in your head — it’s catchy!

Catchy, right?  Everyone needs some “lipstick to kiss kill”.

Mini-Blinds Get Some Love

JT and I unplugged from our cable a while ago and now just have the basic channels along with Netflix.  With the switch to digital, there arrived some extra channels — one of them is 30.2 “Cool TV”.  Music Videos are back on TV.  Don’t tell MTV, but some people actually like to watch music videos . . .

So we were tuned into the 90s video block (I’m a 90s music girl at heart) and this awesome vid from Veruca Salt popped up – “Number One Blind”.  I had never heard this song back in this bands heyday (click the picture to see the YouTube video – I figured out the video upgrade for this tiny little blog would cost $60 — not quite there yet, sorry!).

It made me smile — it’s about mini-blinds (among other things).  I got a sample package from Levelor just the other day – we use them all the time at work.

Too funny.   Anyone else have some good stories of the design world crossing into the real world?

Drab to Fab

Um, so lame post title aside, I did some pillow magic over the weekend.   Thanks to much love from the dogs and JT and myself, our sofa pillows were starting to look a little dull.  I originally made these pillows from an old slipcover and some crazy “stitch art” (similar to the ones I posted about here) and the warm grey suited my winter mood.

Now that we’ve gone through the hottest summer in ages and seem headed into a nice-ish fall, I’ve been wanting a quick and easy update.  Thanks to an iDye packet from Dick Blick, I transformed the pillows (and stained the inside of my washing machine) into a nice turquoise blue.  It matches the new front door color I painted the other day and makes me happy.

Any $4.00 and under makeover that adds this much cheeriness to a room is okay in my book.

The next day the cb2 catalog appeared in the mailbox and what did I see but lovely little drops of turquoise everywhere.  So gorgeous.

I’ve already informed JT that the table runner is coming to our house, soon to replace the Plynyl one for a while.  See that corner of the house here.  Changes are happening people.  Not big ones to be sure but something.  After living rather complacently in this house for the last few years I’m glad to be getting the motivation to start tackling some of these little things.  I think this little ol’ blog has been helping said motivation, so thanks for reading!  (Jessica!).

Baby Steps Bedroom

Thanks to the fur kids always digging little “nests” to sleep in on our bed, two fitted sheets have become destroyed in recent history, leaving us with lots of flat sheets and just one fitted sheet. (Case in point is this fun iphone picture I took the other night of the two culprits.

Maybe The Martha knows how to make a bed that stays made with two flat sheets, but I sure don’t.  Trying to be practical at first, I headed up to Target to buy a few fitted queen sheets to discover that everything comes in sets.  I trolled around the interwebs a little as well, looking for that elusive el-cheapo fitted sheet.  The prices on individual sheets were so high that the most logical thing to do seems to be to get a whole new set.  Rats.

So  then I started dreaming of the possibilities.  To date, we have only ever bought white sheet sets, and that’s pretty boring.  There’s a world of colorful and patterned sheet sets out there.  But really, our bedroom needs a total overhaul and we really REALLY need to get a proper bed.  (I hope you read this JT).  Why you may ask.  As you may or may not be able to tell from the crappy picture above, our box spring and mattress are sitting on the floor.  Yep.  And after 6, soon to be 7, years of wedded bliss, my beloved and I have never purchased a marital bed.  It just doesn’t seem right.

So while visions of a new bedroom swirl in my head, I thought I’d browse around the sheet sets for some inspiration.

Crazy Idea #1) I realized this isn’t crazy colorful and is totally devoid of all patterning but monogramming is a shot in the heart to me, the collector of the letter “T”.  And they’re organic cotton which I think may be a prereq for these new sheets.

Crazy Idea #2)  This next set I may have to go see in person to check out the colors but melikes the pattern for sure: Digital Herringbone!

Crazy Idea #3) This next one is called “Light Aqua Stripe”.  You had me at hello!  Even better, the stripes seem to vary in width.  Yum yum.

Crazy Idea #4) The Company Store — the melon/teal option on the bottom was a strong contender for me until I saw it was no longer available as a fitted sheet.  Blasted fitted sheets!!

Crazy Idea #5) Not organic, but GORGEOUS . . .

So my new Google Chrome browser exploded from too much bed linen fun and I still haven’t decided.  I think the answer will be to make a finish board for the bedroom.  I do them all the time at work but have never yet put in the energy to do one for home.  Any favorites out of the choices above?  I have one!!

Seeking Design Soulmate

I am a lucky, lucky woman and have been married for almost 7 years now.  That is one soulmate I am NOT searching for.

As much as I love my husband (which is a lot), I am still searching for my Design Soulmate.  I know he/she/it is out there somewhere but our paths have yet to cross.  Here’s the deal:  design is a subjective, subjective world.  There’s not always a “right” answer to things.  (Green wall?  Purple wall?  It’s a matter of taste, opinion, PERSONAL PREFERENCE!)  Due to each person’s biology, chemistry, history, astrology or whatever, we all have a different design aesthetic.  So I have been seeking my design soulmate, who, when I say “Let’s paint that wall green”, not only says okay but also says “And wouldn’t it be amazing with some funky large-scale art” and you both nod in agreement.  I’ve yet to have a colleague who is on that same page with me.  Maybe that’s a good thing; we bring different ideas to the table and the best one wins.  The issue I’ve come across in the commercial design world is with the person who picks the winning idea.  If they don’t get/appreciate/understand your design aesthetic, your idea is never going to “win”.  That makes for one frustrated designer (wait this is theoretical, right.  Right).

So in order to best find my Design Soulmate, I figure he/she/it might benefit from a list of design aesthetics/products/ideas they must enjoy.

1.  White
White leather, white vinyl, white walls, white floors . . . .

2. Gray (grey?)  The second most important color after white.  I think every color is fundamentally better with a hint of gray in it.  Case in point: the color of our living room walls?  Sherwin Williams Amazing Gray.

I couldn’t find my source for this photo — probably an Apartment Therapy house tour?  At any rate — grey trim, gray sofa, so fab.

3.  Lucite  – this picture below, from Lonny June/July 2010 pretty much sums it up.

4. Animals – At some point in my life, I fully intend on having my pets at work with me.  So Future Design Soulmate had best be allergy free because these two monkeys will be underfoot.

And finally, my Design Soulmate will obviously have impeccable taste in music as we will blast My Morning Jacket as we work blissfully in our shared design studio.   I’m just sayin’ . . .

(P.S. I’m Just Sayin’ is now a segment on one of our local news establishments.  Not so great.  There’s also a “Cornbread” segment.  Because the guys name is CORNBREAD.  No. Thank. You.)

There’s a lot more to expound on for the one and only Design Soulmate.  I think it best to keep the rest private so I’ll know the real Design Soulmate when they show up.  Hopefully that’s any day now . . .
