Countdown

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have 5 glorious days until my next IKEA trip.

My mom and sister and I have decided to dash up to Chicago for one day to stock up on all the Swedish delights we can handle.  I’ve been plotting and planning for some time now and finally think I have it narrowed down.

All good stuff — some light fixtures and storage pieces for the music room shelving, a neutral duvet and some curtain rods for the bedroom along with the new bedside table that is a fill-in for my Tulip.  And more sheepskins.  I can’t quite reconcile this with my vegetarianism, but I can’t seem to help myself either.

I know a lot of people disagree with IKEA and the mass manufacturing of home goods.  I think IKEA makes great filler pieces and background items that can let all the more original items in your home shine.

Speaking of my home (we were, right?)  I feel like I always show the same few views on this here blog.  First, because I suck with a camera and second because I still have a lot I’m working on.  One of the things on my list is a “House Tour” or something like that.  I did add a “Floor Plan” tab that shows the whole floor plan with its current furniture arrangement.

Here’s a new view for you — the buffet opposite the dining room table.  It’s where things land when we get home — keys, phones, junk.

It’s a mixture of such random things — an IKEA lamp, a Pottery Barn tray, a glass hand from Urban Outfitters and an Elvis postcard we received as a gift.  The buffet we found at an antique/junk mall a few years back.  It had more primitive wooden handles on it which I switched out for the brushed nickel to class it up a little.  The top of the piece has some water damage and needs a little restoration, so for now I use runners.  The one I have on there now is some extra fabric I hemmed up after my last pillow making adventure

So I’m not worried about it looking like we live in an IKEA catalog because I know I’ll always mix it up.  In the words of Violet from Downton Abbey (I just watched it all on Netflix and AM OBSESSED!) — put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Wilco!

I’m always looking for ways to distract myself from finishing projects.  Nothing beats some good rocking as a distraction.  So Tuesday night was Wilco night here in St. Louis.  Actually Tuesday night was a lot of things in St. Louis — Obama’s visit, a Cardinals play-off game and some kind of event at the History Museum (that we got stuck in traffic at trying to avoid the Obama traffic).

My office is right downtown and on opposite corners from the Renaissance Grand where Obama was visiting.   Just about quittin’ time, the street started to go on lock down for the President.

That’s a view out my window from my desk.  It is really interesting all the security measures they put in place for the President’s visit.  I escaped to the MetroLink and met up with JT in Forest Park to avoid the hub-bub.

This night though I was more interested in someone else’s visit — Jeff Tweedy and co!  First up was opener Nick Lowe.

Great picture right?  I know.  When Nick Lowe came back out to play with Wilco during the encore , Tweedy joked that they were now called Wick Lowe.    We came in while the lights were down so we didn’t get much of a chance to take in the scenery.  The Peabody Opera House just reopened a few days prior to the Wilco concert and it was pretty obvious — a large group of seemingly regular concert attenders without any idea of where to go or how to get there.  Everyone kind of just milled around.  When the lights came back up, here was the results of all the renovation:

I had never been in it when it was the Kiel Opera House so I don’t know if they stayed true to the original.  The one thing I didn’t care for?  The carpet.

Not only were the colors kind of blah, it has stylized musical notes on it.  Not a fan.  And this is coming from a person who has used alphabet carpeting in a children’s library.   Sometimes that works.  Here I was hoping for something a little less theme-y and casino-esque and more sophisticated.  But I digress.

Finally, what we came for.  Wilco!  Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm . . .

When I hopped onto YouTube, I found some actual Peabody Wilco footage here.  Not sure how legal that is, but it shows how great the stage looked and Oh! the music.

Have a great weekend!

Fall is here — time for crochet!

Even though it’s about 80 degrees in St. Louis right now, it is still October.  That means fall and fall means hanging out in front of the fire, preferably under a blanket.  It is still way to hot to have a fire but I was thinking I better get started on a new blanket if I wanted it ready somewhat soon.

I really wanted something to go with the new color scheme in the living room but I also didn’t want to break the bank with buying all new and/or extra fancy yarn.  I’m not a big fan of the open stitch, more granny looking crochet, so  I started out with some yarn I already had  in a nice tight stitch.  I’m thinking I will make multiple panels and stitch them together.

I did the first panel kind of freehand and then realized I needed more of a plan to finish up my fall blanket.  Off to the computer I went.  First I drew up my panel in AutoCAD and played around with the remainder of the panels until I found a layout that felt balanced.  Next I got out my kiddie markers and quickly colored up a few to see how I wanted the colors to set up.

Getting closer, but still not quite.  It wasn’t until I scanned these ideas in for posting on the ol’ blog that I realized what I wanted to do.

Ta da!  It felt balanced in color and placement and had enough movement in the way the pattern lays out to feel playful to me.

Now that I have my pattern all set, I do need to stock up on some of the teal/blue color and also some more white and grey if I’m going to finish this puppy up.  I’ve been doing this all with a single crochet stitch and a size K hook.  It’s a great way to pass time while Ken Burns goes on and on and on about Prohibition on the TV.  Did you spot that little ‘yarn purse’ in the earlier picture?

It was a birthday gift from my mother-in-law.  A skein of yarn goes in with the working end threaded out of the grommet.  This keeps your yarn from getting tangled.  Pretty snazzy!  Back in the college days (my early days of crocheting) I would make my sister manage the yarn skein, especially on family road trips where we shared the back seat of the family van.  I had a not nice title for her that was similar to “Yarn Witch” but not quite . . . . so now I have a new “Yarn Witch” and as I already told my sister (in the voice of Donald Trump) – you’re fired!  I’ll report back as to how this whole blanket debacle goes down.

Another Weekend Update . . .

Monday is BACK.  How?  I don’t know.  Also, it’s October.  Crazy.  But we had gorgeous weather this weekend in St. Louis and I got a lot done.  Yay.

First up was finishing off some pesky little things from other projects . . . I’m not always the best about finishing one project before I jump into the next one . . . .
Like the front steps.  I painted everything except the one at the door (because I thought it would get scratched up during new door installation) and the side by the azaleas (because I thought I would get scratched up!)

The azaleas did try to eat me but I put a towel around all the scratchy branches so I could push them back long enough to get my brush in there and paint it.  The epoxy paint has proven to be very durable so far, I would definitely recommend it as an outdoor coating.

The office . . . . I’ve been painting ’til I’m blue in the face . . . .

It’s STILL NOT DONE!  But it’s getting closer.  One step at a time . . .

But a girl (okay adult-type lady) still needs time to relax and refresh.  So Sunday JT and I headed to the winery with his dad and step-mom for a belated birthday lunch.

The drive was scenic, the wine was very good and we had the best weather ever.

There’s nothing like sitting outside getting comfortably inebriated with a group of friends and strangers alike.  All in all a great weekend.  Cheers to a great week ahead!

Sometimes I feel like the internet is taunting me . . .

. . . . like today, for instance.  Browsing through the interwebs, I clicked through a few blogs to end up at Rocket Century, a local STL  MCM resource (but really it’s online only/mostly).  Not only do I find out I had missed an open house/warehouse sale there, but I see this  on their site . . . .

My dream home for my ‘ZZ’ plant, also affectionately known as Zappa or George.  He’s still sitting there in his sad Home Depot pot on his sad wanna-be-Alvar-Aalto-but-really-from-Target stool.  Sigh.  And this is honest-to-goodness vintage.  $125 is still a lot to spend on this right now considering all the other projects I want to do . . . Sorry Zappa.

The Internet continued to knock me around when I spotted this on SF Girl By Bay’s site:

The image was originally posted here on a Spanish (?) design site.  Even in Spanish (not a language I know, except maybe those few words that everyone knows – burrito, chihuahua, etc.), this image says “Here’s the Saarinen table you’ve been searching for to make your bedroom complete and perfect forever and ever.”  Well maybe not that, but you know, what I was thinking when I posted about my search for a Tulip Table earlier in the month.

And to add insult to injury, I saw on The Brick House (another blog I follow religiously) that Morgan just found a Tulip (Coffee) table on Craigslist for $100!!!  I’m glad the thrifting gods smiled on someone, even if it’s not me.

The knock-out punch came this morning when I got an email from Design Within Reach (of rich people) that the Knoll sale (Tulip table is Knoll) was ending.  Sigh again.

I think I may need to unplug from the internet this weekend to keep from being battered any more.  Is there a support group for Internet Bullying of the Online Shopping variety?

In all reality, I have my health, I have a wonderful husband and supportive family and fun, great friends.  I have a job that I enjoy, I have a place to live and I have the dogs for entertainment and companionship.  I have this blog to vent my frustrations and share my design ideas.  I don’t need a tulip table or a bullet planter to complete any happiness of mine.

However, I do believe in surrounding oneself with beautiful, artistic, inspirational things that will last for generations to come, so one day when I’m making the big bucks (call me in thirty years?), they will be mine!!

Oh, the weekend . . .

I’ll never understand how the weekends come and go so quickly.  Due to last weekend being a celebration of my 31st birthday and impending adulthood, JT and my family took me out for a good time.  I don’t know if I’ve fully regained my hearing after going to see 4 bands in the span of 3 days.    It was a great whirlwind though!

Friday we had “80s Night” at the Pageant, seeing Tom Tom Club and Psychadelic Furs.  Both groups were high energy and still have it 30 years later.

But first JT had taken me to dinner at Winslow’s Home on Delmar.
Not only was the food yummy and you could order wine from their wine room, it’s also a “New American General Store”.  I’m not 100% sure what that means except that I like it . . .   I had to really crop down the picture on the right as Mr. T doesn’t necessarily want to star on the blog, but look at all the fun things on the shelves behind that handsome man in flannel.  I didn’t make it out of there without treating myself to a few items.

Saturday and Sunday was the Taste of St. Louis.  I had never been before so I wrongly assumed that it was a poorly attended event (because if I wasn’t there, then probably nobody was there, right?).  Whoa was it crowded.   I saw Fitz and the Tantrums on Saturday and The English Beat on Sunday.
(Have I mentioned before that my photography is horendous?  Plus there was a 7 foot tall man in front of me at the Fitz show.)
The Peabody Opera House is about to reopen and was hosting a preview night.  Somehow my sister and her boyfriend pilfered tickets on Saturday night and instead of being down in the crowd looking up at the Peabody balcony, we ended up on the balcony, looking down on our subjects below.
It was a pretty awesome weekend!

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming. . .

The difference a year can make . . .

Last year I was in New York City with my best friend Jessica and my husband, enjoying surprisingly warm NY weather and soaking in all the sights.
JT and I really enjoyed our trip and still talk about New York all the time.  Every time I open my Elle Decor, I am reminded of how much New York has to offer and in comparison how little there is in St. Louis (design-wise, you know).

One year later, I am here.

There’s a big meeting with some engineers and construction manager about a project.  Oh joy.  (Isn’t my desk a horrible mess?  I couldn’t bear to photograph it the other way because the credenza behind my desk is even worse.  That’s what happens when you have about 10 projects go out in the span of a few months.)

Oh yeah — today is my 31st birthday.  Last year was the big 3-0.  Amazing the difference a year can make!  It is official — I am old(er).  Not really OLD old, but it is the first time I have gone to work on my birthday so I think that signifies a shift to adult life if nothing else does.

Target is killing me!

Okay, so that post title may be a tad on the dramatic side.  However, I had today, September 13th, saved on my Outlook calendar for one reason: Missoni launches at Target!

Ever since I saw the blue/white/green flame stitch/chevron stash box in their look book, I have been waiting for this day to make it mine.  I want to use it for inspiration colors for our soon-to-be-revamped bedroom.  I want some iconic Italian design for my house!   So I have been quietly waiting for my chance to bring it home.
Here’s what Target told me at 7:00am:

Oh no is right.  Here’s what they’re telling me now:
Now they’re too popular for me.

Here’s what I’m telling Target: if you sell out of my stash box before I can even get on your #$$@&% website, we are going to have some trouble.

While I couldn’t get to Missoni, Target did let me look at its weekly ad.  (Gee thanks, Target.)

Freshen up for fall with frugal?  Um, what?  Wouldn’t the essence of frugality be not “freshening up” at all?  Or better yet, doing it at Goodwill?  Just a thought . . . .

Update:  Not 10 minutes after I hit publish on this post, the “Woof” had been replaced with a working website.  Then in the middle of my checkout, it stopped working.  I popped open another browser window and got my credit card info in.  Who I actually gave that to is debatable, fingers crossed a package will be showing up on my doorstep by September 19th.  I’m sorry I ever doubted you Target.  Let’s be friends.

Update update:  Apartment Therapy did a great post on Missoni-Geddon here.

Gosh I’m Glad You’re Not What I Wanted

There is a little street about four down from ours where I like to walk the dogs.  I have a little loop so I don’t go by twice and look like a stalker.  Except I kind of am a stalker.  There are a few houses on this street that I just LOVE!

This one (thanks to the scariness of Google Maps Streetview) —

It is pretty much perfection in my book.   Great lines, simple and they have really cool artwork hanging up inside.

And this one  just a few houses down —

I have always loved the landscaping on this two family.  The evergreens are so unexpected and it looks so private and cozy.

Walking the monkeys by last night, there was also a new addition to the landscaping — a for sale sign. (See the listing here).  I almost died.  With so many projects planned for our little house on Lawn, I didn’t want to think that a dream house of mine might be for sale.  So as soon as we got home, I began the frantic internet search.
Here’s what I found . . .

So a little tradish for my tastes.  Which is fine, my tastes are not everyone’s tastes.  But I don’t think I could justify changing out all the nice work the current owners have done to this place just to make it more “my style”.  It needs to go to someone who will love it just as it is.  And as much as I love love love the private feel of the backyard, methinks the monkeys would not like having any grass and methinks I would not like them toileting on the patio.

So….. life on Lawn is still looking pretty good.  I’m still dreaming about our bedroom makeover and should have some ideas pulled together soon.  I showed the new layout to JT last night.  He’s game but unsurprised at my sudden need to TOTALLY CHANGE EVERYTHING AROUND.  I guess that’s what it’s like to live with an interior designer.  Love you husband!

PS — Shenanigan got a doggy backpack one year for Christmas, spoiled little bastard.  He doesn’t wear it every walk, but it’s pretty cute when he does. (And they also wear Gentle Leaders so they don’t pull me all over South City!)

Wow that front porch behind Shenanigan looks RUFF!  We are working on that right now!  As soon as our new storm door comes in at Home Depot, I will have a before and after post.

A blog about blogs? Yikes.

So I fell hard for Google Reader.  Anna Dorfman at Door 16 (www.doorsixteen.com) recommended it a while back (like a long while) and I finally got around to checking it out.  I spend waaaay too much time browsing blogland.
Enter Reader:

(PS — I was all excited to “Exit Through The Gift Shop”, the Banksy film with the huge elephant image above in Young House Love’s post.  Then I heard about a lot of the animal abuse this elephant endured to be painted like this and I’m not so sure . . . we’ll see).

After you subscribe to your choice of blogs, it shows you the latest posts.  No more trolling around, clicking on every link in my Favorites list to see who updated their blog today.  It’s all right there!

Here’s the list view, because who doesn’t like a little list action:

And finally, because I’ve spent far too much time reading her blog to even bother spending time on my own, my latest obsession, Emily Henderson.  She has a show on HGTV (Secrets from a Stylist) that finally seems like a style I would choose for my own house.  Very eclectic, cool, a little kitschy.

Great, great stuff.  Gotta go – back to blog reading, not blog writing!!
